Earthquake Preparedness 101

February 29, 2020 By Kenny Garrett Leave a Comment

Two Areas of concern: New Madrid Seismic Zone & Wabash Valley Seismic Zone

Before the quake:

  • Secure items that might fall and cause injuries (bookshelves, mirrors, TVs, etc.)
  • Discuss how you will communicate with your family should you be cut off from them (have an out of state contact that everyone in your family knows to call)
  • Make an earthquake kit with important documents, emergency supplies, etc. Store it where you can get to it quickly.

During the quake:

  • Stay low so you don’t get knocked down
  • Cover your head & neck from falling debris, move to a safe place, under a desk or table
  • Hold on until the shaking stops

After the Quake:

  • Look before you move, make sure it’s safe to do so
  • Call for help if you need to and can
  • If you’re trapped, tap on something, make noise so rescuers can find you
  • Once you’re safe, monitor local news for further information or instructions

For us,

Continuous Planning and Exercises

  • Awareness (Public, Private, Government)
  • Responses (work together with local and regional agencies in planning process)
  • Recovery
